About this tool

This removes a solid background — the white behind a logo, the flat colour behind a product shot, the paper behind a scan — and gives you back a PNG with real transparency. It is worth being clear about what it is not: it is not an AI cutout, so it will not separate a person from a bookshelf or a dog from a garden. Those need a large machine-learning model and a server. What this does instead is measure how far each pixel is from the background colour, which is instant, runs entirely on your own device, and is genuinely the better tool for the files most people are actually holding. The background colour is guessed from the corners when you drop the image in, so usually there is nothing to configure. If the guess is wrong, click Pick and then click the background itself. Tolerance decides how much variation still counts as background, which matters for a scan or a photograph where the paper is not perfectly even. Feather softens the cut so the edge does not look like it was done with scissors. By default only background connected to the edges of the image is removed, so the hole in a letter or a gap inside the subject survives — switch to everywhere when you do want those cleared too.

Frequently asked questions

Will this cut a person out of a photo?

No, and it does not pretend to. Separating a subject from a busy scene needs a segmentation model of tens of megabytes running on a server. This works by colour, so it is excellent for a logo, an icon, a product on a plain backdrop or a scanned document, and unsuitable for a holiday photo.

Why does it leave a faint outline around the edges?

Edge pixels are a blend of the subject and the background, so they are neither. Raising tolerance removes more of them and raising feather fades them out instead of cutting sharply. If a pale halo remains on a dark background, a little more of each usually clears it.

What is the difference between edges and everywhere?

Edges only removes background reachable from the border of the image, so white inside a letter O or a gap enclosed by the subject is kept. Everywhere removes every pixel matching the colour wherever it appears. Edges is the safer default and what you want most of the time.

Should I save as PNG or WebP?

Both keep the transparency, so it is only a question of size and reach. WebP is typically about a third smaller for a cutout with soft edges and is supported by every current browser, which makes it the better choice for anything going on the web. PNG is lossless and opens absolutely everywhere, including older design tools, so it is the safer choice when the file is going into someone else's workflow. JPEG is deliberately not offered: it cannot store transparency at all, so saving as JPEG would flatten the background straight back in, usually as black, and undo the entire point.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read into your browser and every pixel is processed on your own device, so the file never reaches a server. That matters for the things people commonly cut out — product photography before launch, documents, personal images.
