About this tool
The tip itself is one multiplication. What actually happens at a table is that six people need to hand over whole notes and coins, and 17.33 each is not an amount anybody can pay. So this rounds each share up to something payable — whole units, or halves — and then tells you what that rounding costs. If everybody puts in 18 on a bill that wanted 17.33, the table has handed over four more than it owed. That is real money, and it is nobody's decision until somebody knows about it. There is also a switch for tax. Whether you tip on the pre-tax total is a live argument that differs by country, so the tool refuses to take a position: tell it what tax is already in the bill and it works the tip out on the rest. What it will not do is quietly tip on a number you never agreed to. Everything happens as you type, in this tab. No account, no advertising, and nothing about your dinner is sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it round up rather than to the nearest?
Because rounding down means somebody has to make up the difference, and the person who ends up doing that is whoever is holding the card. Rounding up is the version where the bill is always covered — and the tool shows you exactly how much extra the table put in.
Should I tip on the total or before tax?
It depends where you are, and people disagree strongly about it. Outside the US it is almost always the whole bill, because tax is already inside the prices. Tell the tool what tax rate is in the bill and it will work the tip out on the rest; leave it at zero and it tips on everything.
Can it split unevenly?
Not yet — this splits evenly between however many people you give it. Uneven splits are usually a different job: working out what each person actually ordered, which is a receipt problem rather than a tip problem.
What currency does it use?
None. It works in whatever numbers you type, so it is the same tool for kroner, pounds, dollars or euros. There is no exchange rate involved and nothing that needs to know where you are.
Is my bill sent anywhere?
No. The whole calculation is a few multiplications and it happens in this browser tab. Nothing is stored and nothing is sent — including if you close the page and come back.
