About this tool
Type something and it comes back upside down: ǝpᴉsdn uʍop ʇxǝʇ. Paste it into a username, a bio, a message or a comment and it stays that way, because it is not a font and there is no styling for the other system to strip. People call it a text flipper, or backwards text — though strictly the letters are rotated and not mirrored, and upside down writing is the more accurate name for what comes out. What it actually does is swap each character for a different character that happens to look like it rotated. The "ɐ" is a Latin turned A, a real letter used by linguists to write phonetics, and the "∀" standing in for a capital A is the mathematical symbol for "for all". That borrowing is the whole trick, and it is why this works in places that allow no formatting at all. It is also why it is not perfect, and the page tells you where. Unicode has no rotated form of most capitals, so the nearest lookalike is used from wherever one exists — Canadian syllabics, Deseret, mathematics. A handful of characters have nothing close and are passed through untouched, and those are named underneath the result rather than left for you to spot. Paste upside-down text back in and it turns the right way up. There is no switch to set wrongly: flipped text is made of characters ordinary writing does not contain, so it works out which direction you meant.
Frequently asked questions
How do I flip text upside down?
Type it here and copy the result. Each letter is swapped for a character that looks like it rotated 180 degrees, and the order of the letters is reversed as well — which is the part most people miss when they try it by hand. Reading order reverses when you turn a page over, so flipping the letters without reversing them gives mirror writing rather than upside-down writing.
Why does it work in Instagram and TikTok bios?
Because the result is ordinary text, not formatting. Those fields strip bold, italics and colours because those are styling instructions, but an upside-down A is just a different character — the same kind of thing as a letter with an accent — so there is nothing to remove. It is also why it survives being copied between apps.
Will every character flip?
Almost all of them. Lower-case letters and digits have good rotated forms, and most punctuation does. Capitals are the weak spot: Unicode has no turned form of B, D, G, P, Q or R, so the closest-looking character from another script is used instead, and a few of those are visibly approximations. Anything with no reasonable match is left exactly as it was and named below the result, so you can see what did not turn.
How do I read upside down text?
Paste it into the same box. It recognises that it has been given flipped text and turns it back the right way up. One caveat worth knowing: a couple of characters flip to the same thing — an apostrophe and a backtick both become a comma — so turning text back is a best effort and may not return the exact punctuation you started with.
Does it work with multiple lines?
Yes, and the line order reverses too. A rotated page has its last line at the top, so that is what you get — flipping each line in place would look like several separate upside-down lines rather than one thing turned over.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The whole swap is a table lookup that runs in your browser, so nothing you type leaves your device and it works with the network off once the page has loaded.
