iLovePDF alternative
A free ilovepdf alternative with no ads and no upload: merge, split, compress and rotate PDFs in your own browser.
The short answer
If you use iLovePDF for the everyday jobs — merging a few files, splitting one, rotating pages, shrinking something for email — this does all of that free, with no advertising and without your documents leaving your computer. If you need OCR, conversion to and from Word or Excel, a real PDF editor, or e-signatures, iLovePDF has those and this does not. The honest split is that they built a full document suite and this is a set of small tools that happen to cover what most people open a PDF site for.

What iLovePDF does better
iLovePDF is far broader. It converts to and from Office formats, does OCR on scans, edits text inside a PDF, handles digital signatures and workflows, and has desktop and mobile apps behind the same account. It is the most-used online PDF software in the world and the infrastructure shows. If your work needs any of that, no browser-only tool is going to replace it.
The documents people merge are the ones worth not uploading
Think about what actually ends up in a PDF merge: signed contracts, invoices, payslips, medical letters, bank statements, a scan of a passport for a rental application. These are the files a reasonable person would hesitate over before handing to a website, and they are exactly the files that get handed over every day because merging them any other way is tedious. Nothing here is an accusation against iLovePDF, who are ISO-certified and say plainly what they do. It is simply that a tool which never receives the file cannot lose it, cannot be compelled to hand it over, and does not need you to trust anyone.
What the free tier costs you there
iLovePDF's free plan is genuinely usable, and it is paid for by advertising — their own pricing page lists "Ad-free experience" among the things Premium unlocks, alongside unlimited processing and larger files. That is a fair trade and it is worth knowing you are making it. This site carries no advertising at any tier, because the tools cost almost nothing to run when they run on your own machine. There is no free version to degrade and no ad slot to fill.
Speed, and why it is not close
An online PDF tool spends most of its time moving your file. Upload it, queue it, process it, download it back — for a thirty-megabyte scan on a normal connection that is the overwhelming majority of the wait, and the actual work is a fraction of a second. A browser-based tool skips both transfers entirely, so merging is usually finished before a server-based tool has finished uploading. The gap widens with file size, which is the opposite of what people expect.
Questions
- Is this really free?
- Yes, and there is no advertising. A free account raises how many files you can work on at once and lets you save results; the tools themselves are not gated.
- Does it do everything iLovePDF does?
- No. Merge, split, compress, rotate, reorder, page numbers, watermarks, signing, redaction and image conversion are here. OCR, Office conversion and PDF text editing are not.
- Are my files uploaded anywhere?
- No. The PDF is read and written by your browser, so nothing is sent to a server. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Practically, your device's memory rather than a policy. Signed out you can work on 10 files at a time, 50 with a free account, 200 on Pro.
