About this tool
A signature you can drop onto a document is one of those small things that is oddly hard to get hold of. Photographing one written on paper gives you a grey rectangle with a signature somewhere inside it, and removing that background properly takes longer than the job it was for. This makes one directly, and saves it with a genuinely transparent background so it sits on top of a form rather than covering it with a white box. The output is a vector path as well as a picture. A signature ends up scaled to whatever space it is dropped into, and a bitmap is either blurry when enlarged or enormous when it is not, so the SVG is the real artefact and the PNG is rendered from it for the places that need pixels. Two details matter more than they sound. The box is fitted to the ink rather than to the pad, because people sign in the middle and leave most of the space empty, and that empty space would follow the signature everywhere it went. And you can type a name instead of drawing one, which is not a consolation prize: a drawing pad cannot be used without a pointer at all, so typing is the only way this tool works for anyone using a keyboard.
Frequently asked questions
Is the background really transparent?
Yes. The PNG is drawn with no background fill at all, so whatever is underneath shows through. The chequerboard behind the preview is there to show you that, rather than being part of the image.
Should I download the PNG or the SVG?
The PNG for anything that expects an image: a PDF form, a word processor, an email footer. The SVG when the signature might be resized, printed large, or used on a website, because it is a description of the shape rather than a grid of pixels and stays sharp at any size.
Why is there so little space around my signature?
Because the border is fitted to the ink, not to the pad you drew on. Most people sign in the middle of the box and leave the rest empty, and that empty space would otherwise travel with the signature and make it sit tiny and off-centre wherever it was placed.
Can I use this without a mouse or a touchscreen?
Yes, that is what the typing mode is for. It produces a real signature in a handwriting face rather than a lesser version, because a drawing pad genuinely cannot be operated without a pointer and telling someone to draw with a mouse they do not have is no answer.
Is a drawn signature legally binding?
That depends entirely on the document and the country, and this tool cannot tell you. In much of the EU a simple electronic signature is admissible but carries less evidential weight than a qualified one from an accredited provider. For anything consequential, check what the document requires.
